In Business coach, business coaching, people development

I love helping people fulfill their potential, figuring out what they want and how to do it.

For the last couple of years I have been working in longer term development processes with some customers. The majority of them in a process of regular, continuous coaching. Then others in more concentrated bouts of coaching, followed by breaks.

Recently three of the people I have been working with as business coach have initiated and put in place big changes for themselves, in their careers in order to live their dreams. Their processes have been such an honour for me to support.

It never ceases to inspire me, what energy people unleash when they feel they have ownership over what they are doing.

I have accompanied a few of these processes by now and never stop learning from them, never ceasing to be surprised by their outcomes, their twists and turns, and always impressed by their force. Mostly my coachees and trainees started on this journey by defining where they want to be in a few years.

Through their work with me, the image of what that was, their goals, became clearer and clearer.

In some cases, the goals changed over time. Sometimes in small ways, sometimes big. Using coaching to realise and detail what they wanted, they cross-checked the fit of their status quo with their longer term goals.

Generally the processes started with intermediate steps of adjusting current ways of working and implementing incremental steps towards their goal. Sometimes the incremental changes worked, sometimes they did not.

A bit like scientists, my customers tried new approaches out, included things that proved successful and important for that final vision and eliminated things that were not.

Throughout this development I supported them as business coach working their way towards their ideal real, something that drives them, that convinces them, and at the same time was tangible enough so that they could implement it. They took some of my advice and some they rejected, all the while honing what was theirs. I love this work.

I love being a business coach and sparring partner to others as something new emerges.

Something that was not there before, would not have been there before and something that is my customer’s own. When I see the determination in their faces, that glow, that smile when next steps are clear, I know they know what they want. That they can counter what seems like every potential hurdle thrown at them. Those moments of realisation are magicial.

And then they go and do…. they change direction, change jobs, change positions, change companies. One of my customers initiated a step down in hierarchy in order to be closer to the activities they were passionate about. It never ceases to amaze me how fast things happen from the point of reaching the magic moment to achieving it. Sometimes I see them a couple weeks later and the change is done and dusted, only minor issues to be finalised.

That potential and drive in people amazes me.

Engaged in their own change, a wealth of determination, energy and motivation is there.

Having got that far, it is time for me to let go. One coachee is setting up their own vinyl store, another starting a new job in a new company.

I have to admit, particularly after longer processes as their business coach, I celebrate their development, and I am happy and also sad to see them go. Connections forged over intense collaboration like these are strong.
